STARTED IN JULY 1987, THE BROWN BAG IS A NONPROFIT AGENCY, THAT PROVIDES GROCERIES TO LOW-INCOME ELDERLY INDIVIDUALS IN COLUMBUS, GA. IT WAS BEGUN AFTER A SURVEY DONE, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE AREA AGENCY ON AGING, SHOWED MANY INDIVIDUALS WERE FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS AND UNABLE TO GET NEEDED ASSISTANCE FROM FEDERAL OR LOCAL PROGRAMS.
​DUE TO THE VARIOUS COMMUNITY GROUPS THAT HELP THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND WOMEN WITH CHILDREN, WE DECIDED TO TARGET THE GROUP THAT CAN LEAST HELP THEIR SITUATION DUE TO THEIR AGE AND CIRCUMSTANCES – THE ELDERLY.
WE DESPERATELY NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE! SINCE NOVEMBER OF 2021, FOOD PRICES HAVE INCREASED BY ALMOST 14%, FORCING MANY SENIOR CITIZENS TO MAKE CHOICES ABOUT WHERE TO REDUCE THEIR BUDGETS. THE NORMAL CHOICES ARE THAT SENIORS WILL CUR THEIR FOOD BUDGETS BEFORE THEY CUT MEDICATION, AND THAT MEANS THAT THEY WILL REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF FOOD THAT THEY EAT EACH DAY.

About 28 Below:
Anytime the overnight temperatures reach 28 degrees or lower, we open our church space to those living without homes or heat. We provide a safe indoor environment, hot meals, hot showers, warm beds, new clothing and hygiene items, snacks, and the love of Jesus. We engage with our guests by playing games, listening to music, watching movies, singing karaoke, or simply providing a listening ear. We offer transportation to and from multiple pick-up locations in the city. We also offer transportation to and from our church services on Sunday if guests would like to attend services.
We have established lasting relationships through this ministry and have been part of seeing individuals move from homelessness and addiction to independence and freedom. We serve because we have been called to serve. We expect nothing in return.
